Kinesiology & Somatic Movement

Kinesiology is the practice and study of movement—and of how the relationships of our lived anatomy and our perception shape our movement potential.

Kinesiology sessions provide opportunity to support and improve health, movement, and ease in daily activities. Kinesiology sessions can include specific stretching and strengthening exercises as well as experiential anatomy explorations, which allow us to investigate the relationship between our own internal experience and external images of our structural anatomy.

The term “somatic” is based on the word soma, which refers to the living body, the experience of having a body. Somatic Movement education and practices are experiential approaches that promote a sense of wholeness and befriending the experience of having a body. These practices invite exploration in movement and sensation that helps us to connect to our inner knowing, to cultivate communication between our body and our mind, and to attune to the ongoing sensory experience that our bodies are involved in at each moment. Somatic movement practitioners may draw from a range of modalities, depending on their training.

In combination, kinesiology and somatic movement interventions can help with acute physical challenges such as accelerating injury recovery and lessening chronic pain. They can also bring about powerful mind-body transformations for improving overall health and wellness (including mental health)—enabling increased energy, happiness, injury prevention, and health resilience under stress.
